Default Shit. Huge suspension bill :(

Took the falcon in to Pedders for a quote to fix the clunking noise from the front today - the quote is frightening:

- Both front shocks leaking and u/s - 385.00
- Both front springs sagged, 45 and 50mm N/S and O/S - 180.00
- Play both ends of rack - 595.00
- Radius bushes in chassis collapsed - 180.00
- Tyres all worn beyond legal limit - 396.00
- Rear shocks leaking and u/s - 205.00

Grand total 1,941.00 :

OK, the rack doesn't feel overly slack, so I'm going to cross that off. Tyres I already know about of course, and have budgeted for that. Front springs can wait, no doubt plenty of serviceable ones appear on eBay for very little from those who've lowered. Leaves me with four dampers and the radius bushes.

Reckon I can manage dampers no problem, but I don't know what bushes they mean, or if it's possible to replace them without a press? Any suggestions on how to trim down the costs well received!

Cheers,
Alex

A trip to the wreckers to find 4 shocks that are not wet ie leaking will save you a bucket load of cash.

Pedders pfffft!

I got a $3750 quote from Pedders. Absolute joke. I replaced every suspension componant, ALL bushes, new king SL springs, new shocks, ball joints, everything, cost me $1k all up. LOL@pedders

Cheers guys, suspected as much. I imagine they have to recoup the costs of their 'free' 28 point suspension check somewhere.

Will AU XR6 springs/dampers/struts fit?

Cheers,
Alex

thinking of these if they'll work? What's live back end? does that mean wagon? Is there such a thing as an XR6 wagon anyway?

If I were to do that stuff, this is what I reckon it'd cost. You can do everything bar the radius rod bushes at home.

- Both front shocks leaking and u/s - $150 the pair brand new roughly
- Both front springs sagged, 45 and 50mm N/S and O/S - $15, I have some in the garage
- Play both ends of rack - $75 from Pick a Part or $100 at a wrecker
- Radius bushes in chassis collapsed - $100.00 at TTF Bayswater, had mine done recently.
- Tyres all worn beyond legal limit - $170.00 I have a set of 4 fitted and balanced 14s.
- Rear shocks leaking and u/s - $150 of so brand new?

That $610 or less than $500 with GSH (Good Second Hand) shocks.

Let us know if you want some springs or 14s.

Live back end means solid axle. These were the norm in sedans up until BA when Control Blade rear suspension became the standard (IRS optional on AU). Live axle is of course still in the ute and wagon but riding on leaf springs.

" They will fit from EA to AU111 with a live rear end. "

That doesn't sound right to me. I thought at least the front struts were different in the AU from the E-series.

Potential buyers be warned!

Thanks for that mate. Anyone else got thoughts one whether they'll fit? Would probably be a nice upgrade for the money if they'll work!

pedders employees are told to quote for a complete changeover rack if something like the rack ends are worn, these can usually be replaced cheaply with quality aftermarket rack ends, yes the inspections are thorough but i believe that the bits should be put in an order of impotance.
It is a shame that the Pedders stores are viewed as rip offs but if the cap fits they have to wear it... it pays to shop around, even if all you do is get the suspension check and then do it all yourself (or as much as possible!)
The product that they supply is usually of very good quality, and i still use it even though i no longer work for them.
Well thats my winge out of the way!
There are more than one suspension suppliers around......

I thought Pedders didnt manufacture jack shit. They buy bulk volumes of gear from the manufacturer Tenneco and paint them red and yellow? Tenneco also make Monroe etc so Pedders is nothing more than a franchise business designed to make one man very weathly, Tony Pedders... I am not really knocking the store owners as from what I've heard they have to mark up heaps to make it a viable business for themselves..

PLEASE -I don't give a fu<k about pedders!! Just need to get my car safe!

So the AU1 struts will fit? Looks like my existing struts have a steering knuckle on them, whereas the ones pictured in the ebay ad do not? Are the knuckle collars removeable, or am I barking up a wrong tree here?

Thanks,
Alex

Ah shit, I dunno. The damper is shot, as is the spring (in my language). What I mean by damper is the oil bearing cylinder which slows the compression/expansion of the spring. The spring (this must be universal??) is tired and running low

Thanks,
Alex

You need springs and shocks thats it... AU series 1 units are listed in the Kings catalogue as a different part number.. EA-EL ones are all the same though
