Default grr... one more thing...

hey all..

since sunday morning last week ive had lots of fun...

start the car to then hear a screeching sound... long story short, alternator was seizing....

A/C was not working... mind you this was all at schoolies, 100km away from home...

get back to melb, rip the alternator out, change the bearings and regulator, whack it back in to witness a new sound...

clutch fan spinning lop-sided.. woohoo i guess i need a new water pump..

since ill be draining the whole system may as well do a thermostat..

radiator and all and clutch fan come out to make way to remove water pump... good fun all goes well..

picked up a second hand airconditioning compressor from a wrecker and changed over the clutch mechanisms so i didnt have to get it re-gassed..

all good.. start the car all is well...

A/C works, engine is quiet... alternator pumping out a nice 14.36V at idle, water circulating... great fun...

take it for a spin... and this is where the problem starts...

Temp gauge gets to 3/4 then drops down to under half.. keeps repeating..

my guess is faulty/wrong thermostat? could this be the case? I have already run it with cap open/heater on etc, to bleed out any air in the lines...

so thermostat people?


please post any ideas/feedback...

yeh dude, common problem. You need to dril a hole in the thermostat.

What's happening, is the thermostat is getting to temperature, when it gets to 3/4, and it's opening up suddenly, letting in alot of cold(er) coolant from the radiator. This then causes the temp to drop, then the thermostat closes, builds up heat in the cooling system again, and opens, hence the repeating.

You need to drill a small hole in the thermostat, to allow for a small amount of cold(er) coolant to circulate before the whole thermostat opens.

This should stop the surging you're describing.

new thermostat had a hole with a little brass thingy loose in it... does this brass thingy need to be removed? or does the hole need to be orientated a certain direction?

its a tridon thermostat... seemed thicker round the base than the old one..

I'm not sure on the specifics of the hole, someone else who has actually needed to do this will know more, but i just know you need to drill a hole in it somewhere to stop the surging.

i have also heard that genuine ford thermostats are the best available if you still have troubles...

grrrr s.o.b. of a thing... the tridon is a high-flow thermostat of some type... i might pull it out tomorrow and try rotating it or something... worst comes to worst ill put the old one back in...

is ford spares open sunday morning?

put the old one back in and all works beautiful... tomorrow ill take the tridon one back and then go get one from ford...

car is runnin better than ever!

Buy a TRIDENT thermostat. It runs cooler than the standard ford item (opens sooner) Ive had one in my XR for a while now and never had a problem. Where NORMAL reads on an EL, the needle sits between A and L Runs a little richer though...

Personally, in my experience I've found non-genuine thermostats to be nothing but trouble, and they aren't particularly cheaper either.

Nothign wrong with too much fuel, except maybe fouling the spark plugs every noe and then, but apart from that, it's safer!

I've also found from experience that the genuine thermostat is the best one for the E series 6.

Ive found that nearly anything from ford spares is a load of crap. Trident thermostats arent expensive and ive never had a problem since i installed it, this was after I bought 3 FAULTY ford ones.
