Default immobiliser on EL

did the EL's come standard with an immobiliser, is it true that the engine wont start unless the car has been unlocked

As you have an EL, try it....

I think the key overrides the smartlock..

The whole thing relys on you having the correct key to turn the ignition. The remote lock has nothing to do with the smartlock immobilisation, it just happens that the smartlock unit also controls the remote locking. you can open the car with the key and it will start, and you can lock yourself in the car and it will start.
The key is everything, but not like in the AU2/3 which has a transponder chip inside it. If the smartlock ignition barrel can be turned, smartlock will be disabled.
