Many moons ago I had what sounds like similar symptoms in a HQ 4spd. In that case it turned out to be the front counter shaft bearing dying. It only did it in the lower gears because as you go up through the gears and swap cogs the load shifts back along the shaft to the rear where the bearing is still ok hence there is now no pressure on the front bearing so the noise goes away. Lean on the shifter when you move off and if there's a problem in the box you should feel it transmitted up through the shifter. If it is the front bearing I'd be pulling the box out asap before the bearing collapses completely and locks up the box. If you must drive it like that I'd strongly suggest light throttle, low revs and short shift till you get into 4th to lessen the chance of leaving bits of gearbox all over the road.
Cheers Bushbasher

Just got a price on an overhaul kit and a basic kit
$375 for overhaul $195 for basic, basic comes with gaskets some bearing and seals. How hard is it to do a rebuild on one of these? are the bearings pressed in? Im waiting on a phone call back to see if its covered by warranty so ill go from there. |
