the ea head is very different the motors are the same minor some little differences but as for working the head i would get a second hand ef head off a tickford six and flow it as they have slightly better castings other wise the ef head is by far the best option as the ea has low comp swirl in it and has poor castings is very workable but the heads are crap for large amounts of work best peice of advice is work the motor that you have in your car now and then you also get to keep the same engine number and dont have to tell the rta

so i could use the block? but buy a ef head then it would basically be a ef? cause it will be a slow build up so i couldnt work my original motor and when its done will be transplanted

not really but the ef crank is a little better but it does not matter if you do all the right things to your engine like nitrating the crank and rods after market rods and pistons blue print and balance the whole engine and do the head

To answer Shoey's question, the EF crank has extra counterweights so it is better balanced. The extra 35cc in the 4.0 engine come from a slightly larger bore.

Streeter I agree a properly treated & balanced crank is more important no matter which way you go. On a shoestring build like this one sounds like (practice build?) perhaps use the EA crank until you are ready to build a motor "properly" (as described in quote).

The EF motors had 12 counterweights as opposed to the EL which had 8, so its slightly smoother.

Also, the EF motors had coils rather than distributor like the EL went back too..
