When I went to see it we cruised down in my coupe and meet 8 other coupes there. When it was finish it felt so good to drive home in the coupe. I had a few holden mate come and see the movie with me. Before the movie they were saying this is going to be crap all abouts heaps of junks. When it was finish I had to hand them a tissue as they loved it.

Well I caught up with "Jack" in Echuca at the coupe show, and specifically asked what's going on with Eric's car. He said there is a team in Queensland who do repair work - and in particular chassis straightenning - of cars with roll cages including the V8 Supercar teams. Its a fairly specialised field trying to rectify cars like that, as the roll cage in "doing its job" sends the stresses of the crash through all the chassis and warps every damned bit of it.

So - its a massive job, but this Queensland based firm is the one capable of straightenning her out. Jack stated Eric was "mad keen" to get it sorted out, as his enthusiasm had returned, and he expected to make it a tough street car with some track work, not a full blown race car again. He also said - and you can't take this as gospel of course - that Eric would LOVE to go to an event like the Echuca Coupe show, and sort of indicated he planned to be at the 2011 event. I guess time will tell and I don't see the organisers making a big deal out of that even if he did register, I'd say he would want to keep it low profile and just enjoy the cars like the rest of us.

Jack also said he was still looking for a coupe ...

And I WISH I thought to ask him about the Thunderbird - I almost shed a tear in that scene when Ma clearly didn't get it, and said it needed to go (presumably for the humpteenth time), Pa's face said it all.

So Eric's gonna be there?! HAIL!! The grand poohbaah of coupes!!If the Coupe Club of Australia wants attention from the general public and the media, they'll get it if Eric Bana's there!P.S. ''Jack'' was talking to me about my car too, thought he looked familiar, but couldn't place where I've seen him before. Hit me who he was when I got back home!

I'd prefer to see his car brought back to tough streeter rather than a race car. Love the Beast more when you can just go for a cruise in it with a few mates.

i loved the movie, but I dont understand the crash. I always thought he raced and crashed his car, then made a doco with a replica of his car and crashed that aswell, as part of the movie. But thats not what happened is it? Is it that the film crews were at the actual race and he happened to crash it so they put it in the movie? Or the film crews were at the race and he was ment to crash it, aka it was in the storyline or what?

But I also saw the episode of Top Gear UK when they interveiwed Eric Bana and he said the worst part about the crash was that he knew it was going to happen. I took that to mean it was planned, but maybe he ment he couldnt avoid it or something.

He said on top gear uk late last year he was only gonna rebuild it if it didn't need a re-shell. It doesn't so he is going to rebuild. They showed the trailer for love the beast on TG and clarkson didn't even mention he was in the doco.

Lots of people buy cars at 15 or even less - I think my dad had an Austin 7 when he was 14 and two years to take it apart and rebuild it before he got his license. That would have been 1954-56, however when I was 16 and looking for cars I wanted a Charger, but couldn't afford $2,500 for one of them or justify it while a sedan was half that price. Looked at lots of rubbish I could afford for $500 or so, finished up buying a $1,200 CM Regal with $600 from my dad, in 1998. So there's nothing about wealth or snobbery when you look at what a heap of junk Eric's coupe was, and the likely value when he bought it. Geez I paid $1,000 for my one owner 96,000 mile coupe in 2003.

The crash was absolutely not staged and there was no replica car - OMG - there wasn't even any film crew at the crash FFS. You got the incar footage, some camcorder, and the news' coverage. As he said on Late Show or Top Gear or wherever - part of him was crushed to be out of the event, concerned for his mate's safety and the extent of damage to his beloved car - the other part of him, the film maker side, realised this was a massive plot twist to the movie he'd been putting together.

Words like "knowing it was going to happen" refers to the slow-motion effect as you lose control and see exactly what's coming.

Does anyone know if his mum watched the movie and realised what the Thunderbird meant to him and his dad?

Having done the same Targa Tas event several times competitively and having had several near misses, you know when your going to crash before it happens. I think thats more what Bana was getting at.

You can't embed on these forums. And I can't believe you didn't get out to check for damage to radiators or whatever - although I guess that's the thing about racing is that you just can't afford to care about your car at all. I think its pretty stupid deliberately driving through the fence a second time, but then I assume it would cause substantial damage to the car and carry a high risk of injury/impailement - perhaps this assumption is compeltely incorrect and the risk is negligable making back tracking to where you already breached it really a waste of time, maybe you could enlighten us more on this? Pics of the damage?

I'd still love to be part of the "thoroughbred touring" type class, as I care too much about my car to go pushing it that hard for the sake of a timer; but I enjoy spectating!

We did cop alot of flak over this incident from the wider internet community, however speaking with the event director we did the right thing.

The paddock was a bog hole, so if we had stopped, it would have caused the event to stop aswell as it would have been considered dangerous to other competitors. No chance of going back through the same hole (as above) plus it was a steep bank. Had to keep speed up to avoid getting bogged. A quick look up the fence line saw no gates to use. The event is insured for accidents like this and the fence was quickly repaired afterwards (we were just lucky it was only grass and not crops otherwise WE would have been payig for them!). As for damage, cosmetic only, she is a pretty tuff car.

At the time we were leading Classic outright by about 20 seconds, so the added pressure of maintaining our lead was with us. We actually lost approx 30 seconds, but made it up 2 stages later.

Sorry to steal the thread away

Your footage made it onto the 2nd disc of Love the Beast (part of the special edition DVD set).

I've seen the movie a number of times now and still love it!

Pretty sad we have had to withdraw from this years event due to ill health, but hopefully back next year. Would be awesome if Bana came back next year also!
