Default buying a used car - where to do checks?

hi guys,

i am thinking about buying an ed xr8 sprint

it has been some time since i brought a used car, i want to know where and how to check if cars have been stolen, have been a repairable write off, or been in any sort of accident, and how to check it is a genuine car its claimed to be

If the car is in NSW the RTA website has a vehicle check that is free it gives info about current vehicle status and other general stuff. If you pay the extra $20 or so it will make available the complete history including how many previous owners and any damage or write off status. My daughter was looking to buy a Rav4 we paid the $2o bucks and found 2 cars that were priced at 15k were infact repairable write offs. Surely Vic has a similar system.

Make sure anybody buying a car does this, My brother brought a Ute of ebay , guess what it was a repairable write of he paid 2K for it and it needs min 4K of repairs as has has chassis damage.
