Unhappy Inventor of Segway dies in Accident

THE mega-rich owner of the Segway company has died after driving one of his own machines off a cliff and into a river.
Former miner Jimi Heselden — one of Britain's most generous men — was driving a rugged country version of his famous two-wheeled Segway scooters near his home in Boston Spa, West Yorks, yesterday.

His shattered wife Julie was being comforted by friends last night.

Pal Leon Parish said: "It happened while he was going around his property - it's devastating."

That is tragic. I saw these in America. Amazing machine. But, not allowed here!!!
Dept of Transport won't let them be used. Novotel Twin waters has them for hire around their resort only.

Probably not when you take the thing off a cliff, no.

Yep a person dies from it, it's now going to be labelled as too dangerous. Just like driving a car, flying in a plane, playing sports, walking, running. Don't eat either as you may choke.

I think a bit of the information is a little incorrect.
The guy was in no way involved with the invention of the machine, he was simply the owner of a company that bought the segway company in the UK.

Just another old man riding something that he probably shouldnt have been doing.

Probably rode the machine very similar to how businessmen run their businesses today. Dont know how to control it, but take it very close to the cliff, and dont have the brains to know when to jump off.

I'm not entirely sure I understand how you manage to roll over a cliff, on a device that only moves at a walking pace, when there is nothing keeping you from jumping off.

I do hear they're having trouble keeping the coffin horizontal.

A bit harsh considering you only read 3 or 4 lines of a post in a forum. Care to enlighten us to the actual facts as to how this man conducted his buisineses. Why you think he shouldn't have been riding it and what makes you think he has no brains. Ever thought he may have suffered a heart attack or stroke which didn't allow him to slow or get off.
Maybe you should read this before making such remarks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimi_Heselden

He was in his early 60's, only bought SEGWAY this year. Worth approx $400,000,000 odd ...... think he was fairly successful and in control of his business life I would say?

In 2008 Heselden donated £1.5 million to the Help For Heroes fund through a charity auction bid for nine people to fly with the Red Arrows and in the same year set up the Leeds Community Foundation in his home city with a £10 million donation. A further £3 million was added to the foundation in 2009 and an additional £10 million in 2010. Until recently, he had been particularly reticent about his charity work.
“ There are people out there who are making money and when times are good I honestly believe people have a moral obligation to use their wealth to help others. ”

"Inventor of Segway dies in Accident"
Wow, that's a lead in to another Segue; "It's really time to talk about life insurance. Acme insurance makes sure your loved ones are looked after".

I think he was worth 400mil so I reckon his family will be looked after. But he wasn't the inventor just the owner of the company.
