I used to do a bit of that when I was about 20.
Once we were on Mt Mowbullan in the rain and as I was the junior I was the climber. I actually climbed through the cloud into the sunshine while they all got wet. But that was maybe 400ft not outer space like those loonies...... |

thats not for the faint hearted .
i work at heights regularly . i dont fear hieghts . but that is so risky i cant believe nothing goes wrong . any injury up there and you in trouble imagine one of thoise spikes grazing through your back . this is extreme , but how these guys do it is in mindset . , if you can do it at 100feet you can do it at 1700 , the risks and result are the same . |

I think I would be investing in a parachute and base jumping lessons. Would be better then climbing down :P
Also just noticed the beacon light at the top is just 'plugged' in with an industrial socket. If its not working just call tech support, "have you checked to see if its plugged in?".

bugger that....
i climb power poles and have to wear full body harness and have atleast one safety strap on at all times. and thats for up to about 17 metres. i guess they figure that if you slip when your up that thing you might as well just fall to the bottom because who is going to go up and bring you down if your hanging in the harness. that way they can just get a hose and hose you away, saves the crows eating you .

Oh. nah, nah, nah, nah, I cant watch this!
I have nightmares of this exact scenario. When he got out of the cage and had to climb out and over the platform to get to the pole I could not watch anymore as its exactly the same as my nightmares I get. Suprised tho that he uses plain ol riggers gloves and not some tight fitting climbers gloves with grip.

A great video, thx. reminds me of a job I did welding a cleat onto a beam 3/4 the way up the side of ch7`s tower on Mt dandy about 25 yrs ago. I had to shimmy out onto the beam & weld the cleat to hold a microwave dish on the underside with no safety-lines etc as there wasnt anything to attach one to. When you are a boilermaker your world basicly only exists thru the very small lens in your helmet & the job is 'everything' & if you didnt do it the boss will find someone else who would. At the time I was being paid the princely sum of $15/hr which was above the standard of the time. No safety lines & the first thing to interupt gravity before you go over the fence on the way down the side of a very steep incline was the steel of the tower kinda gives you a modicum of focus. Worksafe didnt exist back then & ppl were still cheap with your skills.
It all comes down to this,,, do you have enough faith in your own abilities or not? If you didnt back then, then you should be in an office & be only worried about the major risk of a bad paper-cut. & yes,,,, I`m an 'old fart' cheers rij |

Makes you wonder about the process by which they build them. Imagine the guys attaching each new section, as it gets thinner and thinner, with less to hang on to! Imagine doing up all those bolts! Oooooooohhhh gives me the shivers! GK
