Default What's next

Where I live there was an article in the paper about the new weapon to fight hoons. It is a sound meter, if your car is post 1982 and your exhaust is louder than 90db it is a defect for you sir, if it is pre 82 you can have 96db.

What's next?

Things are getting harder , at the moment we are doing noise and emissions tests for future models and the noise drive by tests we are told we have to meet are 70db

Those laws and restrictions have been around for a long time now. So you're suggesting that it's fine to allow excessively loud cars on the road?

Those noise limits have been in place for years - but the testing speed is at 75% of the RPM where max power occurs and there is a certain angle and distance the microphone has to be set up at in the test.

So my XE Falcon was tested at 2775RPM and a hard revving VTEC Honda would be at 4500RPM+

There's a difference between a 'nice sounding' loud car and a 'dying moose' sounding rice car.

I hope it gets all those morons on their two stroke trail bikes and noisy Harley's that you can hear coming for miles.

How is having a loud (even relatively loud, nice sounding) car being a hoon?

Bikes have higher limits - probably as they rev higher and the exhaust is shorter and not shielded further like the underside of the car can - but there are definitely Harleys out there with aftermarket exhausts that wouldn't pass.

Both bikes and cars would exceed these limits at full revs - they only have to be under in the situation set out in the test.

It isn't but its easier for the nanny state politicians to tar all modifications with the same brush...

I've also heard talk of making it illegal to have bald tyres on your car and soon they will have laws against street races and burnouts on public roads......

lol at GTP 290.

I thought the law was 92dB for exhaust. Tested mine at tafe once and it was 120dB but have never had any questions or mention of it from the police.

Be nice if we could organize ourselvs and stand up to all of this (profiling) and government bullying so we can get some reasonable compromises to these kneejerk laws.
