Default Uh oh... Strange Noise

Hey all.

I think I've damaged the engine in my XR again. : There is a strange beeping sort of noise, that appears to be coming from the rocker area of the engine bay.

Tried the screwdriver stethoscope trick, and I've narrowed it down to the Cylinder 5 area.

Weird noise, just sort of goes Beep, beep, beep beep beep, beep.

I'm suspecting another valve spring, (well I hope thats all it is)

Whats your opinion?

Yeah bro, I'm gonna try. I can't believe how this stuff happens just before trips like this.

Its very strange, generally from what i've heard. If a spring breaks, the car starts missing through the rev range, and in some cases drops the valve which of course is a bad thing.

Problem is that the car is not missing at all. Its a bit rough at idle, but it always has been. I can't notice a change in how its running, except for this strange sort of beeping noise.

Does anyone think this is a valvespring? Doesn't seem right to me.

I'll pull the rocker cover off and have a look, take a few pics.

It doesnt sound like one mate but its very hard to diagnose without hearing them. Dont you have Crow springs in there anyway?

Could it be a noisy lifter? When was your last oil change?

Oil changed yesterday, I thought that may have been a problem, but its probably worse after I changed it.

Crow springs, Yes in one cylinder lol. When it broke the spring in the smash repairers I only had the single one replaced.

Lifter noise? I have no idea what it sounds like...

^^^ Lol, yeah didn't have funds at the time

Well I pulled the rocker covers off. Found no problems under there.
All springs appeared to look ok, bit hard to tell.
All rockers moved up and down in sync when I turned the engine over.
All the pushrods are centred.
Springs appear to be seated ok.

I'm putting it back together right now and I'll see if I can pinpoint the noise again.

Well next time, I'll spend a little more time diagnosing the location of the sound lol.

After pulling the top half off and inspecting everything, I found that it's all in tip top shape.
So I re-assembled the car, started it and tried pinpointing the noise again.
I could still hear the noise through cylinder 5, but whats underneith that on a V angle....

The bloody waterpump. Thats all it is, had me shittin bricks lol

Na uh, You want my XR you gotta get through Adam first . Besides I don't think he wants to walk home, (not that it'd do any harm lol) : j/k mate

On a more serious note though. After this scare with me thinking I'd rooted a valve spring, I think I'll take Austins and undoubtedly your advice russell, to change all the springs over to new ones. Its not worth the risk over a $100 saved.

On a side note, does anyone know how to remove the pulley on the water pump?

Ripper Appreciate that.

Why didn't you use them though? Edelbrock heads had better springs did they?

Not yet. I don't think I'm going to albury.

Can't afford the pump and the petrol and associated costs together.

If I replace the pump I'm out

If I don;t replace the pump I could come, but 1200km on a rooted pump is asking for trouble. The last thing I want to do is cook my engine.

So I'm preety ****ed off right now :

Are you sure that there is a problem with the pump and it isn't just a squeaky pulley?

Yeah nearly positive. I can hear the beeping sort of noise inside the car with the music on.

Used a long screwriver and sat it ontop of the waterpump housing, and you can clearly hear the evil sort of noise in there.

P.S - I might try pulling the belt off, and turning it over by hand. It should spin preety freely right? If I can feel resistance when turning it that would nearly have to assure that its buggered right?

Do that, I have a bit of a squeaky pulley on mine but it's not as loud as yours.

If its still in the car, then there will be resistance from the water... unless you drain it... if pulled out of the car, then it should spin freely.

Well by the sounds of it... its not the impellor blades... otherwise your car would be cooked by now... sounds like it could be the bearings... but if you are lucky... it might just be some loose crap floating around too...

Well if you turn it on the car and it was bugger'd i'd assume you would feel some inconsitantcy too it and that it would probably have a tighter spot in it, as for if squeaky pully, spray some crc down onto pulley and see if squeak goes away, just be careful though, although it shouldn't come off, i have seen the belt come off from people spraying crc on with engine running.

I'd go Silicone Spray to lubricate it as opposed to CRC/Penetrene/WD40/think of all the other names for it.

Although a spray of CRC may just dislodge some gunk build up behind there.
