Default Lifters - Can you get better ones?

Gday all,

The lifters on my Au are noisy as hell, and after experimenting with a few different oil weights they arent going to settle down. Can you buy higher quality lifters instead of just replacements?

Made a few calls, AU lifters work brilliantly apparently, theres just a seal which gets old and cracks on them resulting in buying new lifters, dont seem to be able to replace the seal either!

I was just hopeing to find some after market heavy duty type lifters...

Ah ok. Thats pretty good news then. When i replaced my stock cam with the dev4 my lifters ticked for about an hour then they cam good. Since then not a worry.

I am going to start looking as different bits and pieces to build a good NA head for the AU. Like if there is better rockers, springs etc. Anyone know much more?

he obviously doesnt know his ford engines.

Being overhead cam, I would have assumes the is a roller rocker style assembly but not like the pushrod engines of old.

As far as lifters are concerned, I didnt think the AU's had them being OHC. I thought we had lash adjusters.

haha ok then ... so pushrods operate the valves directly with magic?

our SOHC cams have rockers, which are the direct link between cam and valve (no lifters or pushrods)

the DOHC have a cam over valve, where the rocker has been eliminated and the cam directly operates the valve (with bucket and shims)

Also we have no adjustment as such in our rocker gear either, the only way that can be altered is by spacing or shaving the rocker seats (or rocker gridle), which alters the preload (geometry) of rocker to cam and valve. that sometimes may become an issue when replacement heads are installed with old cam and rocker gear and the rocker girdle seat may have a slightly higher or lower hight than the old head has had, or new high lift cam are installed and the cam lobe lift maxes out the valve lift.

Atomic do a duel valve spring upgrade for the AU engine for $350. Good idea if your going to be working the engine as the original valve springs will eventually give you grief.

You can get seals from Repco for the 'lifters', which are really hydraulic lash adjusters.

BTW, the AU has roller tipped roller rockers as standard. The Ford 6 has done so since the EA.

allow yourself a couple of hours as they are fiddly plenty of clean lint free rags and clean everything thorughly use engine oil to reassemble the lifters and they will rattle like mad when you first start up till they bleed the air out of them
