A dremel is really handy. Then a %&*# load of sandpaper, buffer and some metal polish will do the trick. Not a fun job though, takes a lot of time and patience. I'm never doing it again.

These are some photos from a couple of months ago, when I had the job half finished.
I should take some more now, cause I have finished polishing it all now, including the alternator.

Get a quote on taking it to a polisher....wouldn't be a lot I wouldn't think....and if the quote is good enough, you won't even bother doing it yourself

I used autosol, but theres no point using it till your right at the end of the job. Grab a dremel to remove most of the roughness. I found the sanding belts worked well here, then work up your way up in sandpaper. I started with 180 grit then went up from there, till there were no scratches present from the previous grit. (This is important at the end for a good finish)

I used 180, 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, 1500. Once finished with that, then I hit it with autosol, and a buffing wheel in the dremel again.

, I know the feeling. I cant say it enough, but I love my Dremel. Without it the alternator would have driven me mental. If you don't have one, go and get one. It'll save a lot of bull%&*$

I couldn't get in the grooves on the side so I painted it black and then sanded/grinded the top, I used a drill with really course scotch brite type pads and worked down 3 stages, wet rubbed, then polished with with a pad on the drill (PURPLE POLISH)

Are you going to clear coat it to keep the finish? If not, you will need to polish it regularly to keep it looking that good.

well it's allready back on the car, so it looks like I will have to polish it every now and again, unless I just mask around it and do it in the engine bay
