Default Quick question on windscreens

Just a quick question on windscreens. I had a crack on the PASSENGER side of my windscreen. It was a crack that started at the bottom and worked its way to the top.

Now I understand that you can have a damaged windscreen as long as the driver's view wasn't impaired ie, there isn't damage on the drivers side of the windscreen.

I ask this question as my car recently failed a pink slip and I was forced to buy a new windscreen. In the past, my car has passed with the crack.

This question only applies to those who either live in NSW or have knowledge of NSW registration rules. Who knows, there might be a Australia-wide rule that applies to this situation.

I had a similar situation when my old EF went in for its RWC, i had a crack about 8cm long in the bottom right (drivers side as youre looking from inside the car) of the screen. I checked the rules on the RTA website and from what I can remember, it is allowable if the crack is no longer than 10cm and does not impair vision, so I would take that as not being fair across your centre of vision etc.

I dont remember the exact wording but it is all available on the RTA website in a PDF document which tells you what they look for when doing an RWC.

I also thought the crack/damage wasn't allowed to be within the swip area of the wipers too.

cant be in the drivers vision, cant be in the swipe of the wiper blades and cant have penetrated the inside/second layer of glass.
not sure if there is length issue either but i would say that a crack from top to bottom has severely weakened your windscreen enough to be a danger to you and your passenger if you ever hit a bird or other object.

Keep in mind I'm in NSW but the crack in my windscreen was easily in reach of the wipers, and it passed RWC.
Windscreens have 3 layers to them so if the crack is only on the first (and outside) layer it shouldnt really be any weaker than one that doesnt have a crack.
