yeh cat could highly be a possibilty, the exhaust has not long been replaced with 2.5inch but at idle there is a rattle coming from cat convertor hmmmm, may have to drop it and see, if it is whats the best replacement, would i be ok for a few weeks to gut it till the extractors get fitted and a new cat then

if you gut the cat be shure their are no loose bit's
to blow into the resonator, otherwise that will block too.

Inconsistent response when putting the foot down. A general feeling of being sluggish (not me the car! LOL!) and the surging as you mention.

Had similar symptons at about 270,000k's. Had excessive endplay in the shaft that drives the oil pump and camshaft position sensor (CPS) (on intake side of block, where the camshaft was in the old 250). As the shaft bounced back & forward it flogged out the CPS, which in turn stuffed the injector timing as they switched from sequential to bank firing at around 3000 rpm. Endplay in this shaft is apparently a common problem in high-mileage I6's.

The fix ended up costing me about $1600. It required removing the radiator and front cover off the engine. Just as I sent it to the workshop I found a leak in the radiator, so I got that replaced at the same time, as well as the water pump and harmonic balancer.

It would be worthwhile to get your codes checked, most places I've spoken to will run diagnostics for between $60 and $90. This should tell you if it's a problem with fuel injection.

it has gone into LIMP MODE. one of your sensors has failed . disconnect all your plugs on throttle body, and else, and reconnect again . then disconnect your battery for 30 minutes . and try it then , go driving for 30 minutes . if still the same . go to dealer/ or auto electrician for diagnosis., either this or an exhaust blockage or both . but id say it has gone into limp mode .

basically , limp home mode on your engine is controlled by the ECU. it fixes the timing to one position and lowers maximum revs. it will not accelerate fast, becuase of this the auto feels wrong and delays changing gear etc etc.
It is triggered when a fault occurs on engine monitoring componants which go outside the operable scale . the limp mode comes in and, allows safe engine operation. i just thought of something with the AU. AS WELL it will go into SAFE MODE if the water runs out of the radiator . another mix to the equation . more to go wrong .
an example of an engine going into limp mode is when water gets into throttle sensors etc etc etc etc .
it happened with my EL . I unplugged the throttle body sensor and replugged it . disconnected the battery to reset the ECU. and then over 20minutes of driving the ECU learnt the driving style again ' it was an eary experiance but true.

Good outcome chrispie! My wagon is on LPG so the filter trick isn't going to help me! LOL!

I'm looking at a new cat and possibly exhaust tomorrow morning.

Glad you've got it sorted.

Cheers,

GK
