I had a similar noise when I turned the steering full lock reversing out of my driveway. I checked all the front suspension nuts for tightness and found all was Ok there. I did read a post about dry balljoints so I gave the tie rod ball joints a lube of grease by gently prying the rubber boot back with a small blunt probe and used a syringe to pump grease into the joint. I have had no noise since. My AUII has relatively low kilometers (65000) and no unusual tyre wear in the front so I figured I could get away with a lube and judge the results on the road. If you have a high mileage vehicle and that sharp clunk noise is occuring regularly I would see a suspension specialist.
cheers
Bill.

I an tending towards a ball joint that is causing the clunk on the driver's side in my ute as well ... it's about the only thing I haven't replaced yet ... LOL.

I am nearing 200,000km too
