GazzF6,that would have to be a good battery for $400!Yeah it does sound as if standing batteries wear out quicker.But it looks like the modern batteries just don't last as long.It's all about money.I mean can you actually buy a battery these days that you can maintain & check the acid strength & level?

Maintenance free is what I call built in obsolescence.
