Unhappy 1994 laser wont start. It died on road

Alrighty then I have a 1994 Ford laser. 1.8
Going to work one day. Car just stopped.

Would not restart.

Wife tried to restart 4 hours later and it fired and ran rough for 6 second or so then nothing. Would not fire 4 hours later next try.

I will check for spark in the morning
I will check for fuel pumping in the morning.

My main questions are,
Should I hear the fuel pump whir when the ignition is on or will I hear it when it cranks. Will I hear it at all??
Where is it located

What kind of fuel pressure should I have. A little like a carburetor car or or a whole lot like a garden hose or even more.

Can a blocked fuel filter do this?

Dont think its a fried modulator. had one in a holden
(Sorry forced purchase ignorance of youth etc)
Not temperature related and not intermittent like the holden.

The only thing I could say it did was surge a little over the past 2 weeks while cruising at 70km.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
