This noise has been happening for quite a while now and it seems to be getting worse...whenever the car's fully warmed up and as i come to a stop(especially breaking going down a hill) i hear this horrible grinding type noise. its not the break pads cauz they have been checked, i'm very sure it's the ball joints as i know this is a common problem with the au falcons...i asked my uncle as hes a mechanic and he rekons it isint but im pretty sure it is...

I get the same thing, its not too loud but it's a grind that lasts for about 2 or 3 seconds while braking, or turning almost full-lock at low speed... could be the ball joints. When I get time I'm getting a full pedders check.

The Grinding noise is common on the Au's its to do with the hand brake. Ford service mechanics told me ford hasnt got a tool designed yet to adjust them properly so they just guess and adjust it by hand and spray wd40 on it the sound goes for about 3 months and returns. They said the cheapest way to stop the noise was to get a loud stereo and turn it right up.

ball joints shouldnt make that noise...

It's not the pads they're fine, as for the hand brake theory..i actually had the car checked out at auto leaders a while ago when i complained about this noise whenever i would reverse out of the garage first thing in the morning and apparently they said there was noise coming round the hand break is and it still does it...

I don't know if the calipers are anything like the old XB's (I know there's a lot of years difference but mines only done 134,000k's), but that was happening on my car , noticed it first when towing my racecar (heavy load) after a while it started under heavy braking when not towing , then all the time when braking .
Turned out it was the pins were worn in the caliper (front only), it let the caliper move just enough to hit the disc , replaced the pins & no probs since . Also the wifes ED Fairmont had a similar sound from the rear disc's when reversing , (shuddering & grinding sound) , we had the disc's machined because they were a bit "glazed" & that fixed that one . Might not be either , but worth looking at .

What kind of pads do u use coz i had problems with bendix pads grinding and making noise. Even with new front rotors and new pbr calipers and pads it still grinds sometimes when reversing or when pulling up. also it has the unfixable hand brake howl when i go round tight turns[i got sick of trying to adjust the poxy thing and gave up coz it howls no matter what]
