Australia's tough new anti-terror laws

They can hold people in captivity for 2 weeks without a charge?! I think we are becoming over policed... there must be some other way to deal with terrorism, right? I can understand they need to catch the bastards, but couldn't innocent people be effected by this?

It IS a fact of life mate, AND where we're heading!

Not closed, just being held for 14 days without charge.

I'm not fussed by it. Probably because I'm white. Does the Muslim community have reason to be worried? Probably. Will it encourage them to dob in any wrong doers to keep a clean image of themselves? I hope so.

It bloody IS extremely controversal.
BUT... It IS also NOW a fact of life...We cannot continue to bury our heads and deny the fact.... I think open, sensible discussion is not just benificial, but important... For gawd's sake, have a little respect for the intelligence of us all here. (off my box now.. Cheers)

So far it is being handled quite well so there is no need to close it. You are making a big deal out of nothing more than a reminder.
I respect nearly everyone's intelligence but unfortunately, not everyone is tolerant. Once some people are confronted with an opposing viewpoint they just get abusive. All we want is to avoid that. Some people can't 'discuss' things without resorting to sniping.

I think they suck the big one : basically because it is a breach of our rights and they can basically hold anyone on any kind of reason, whether real or imagined.

I half agree with that. I think if they have a legitimate reason, they should be able to hold someone - but not for too long. I think everyone should be entitled to a hearing in court swiftly, none of this waiting for months in gaol for a day in court.

I think the government takes advantage of situations and media hype to lay down news laws, taxes, and enything else in their favour.

probably not only taking advantage of the situation but what if.......they created the situation!!!! What i mean by that is the goverment makes this "terrorism" thing up to create panic so they can start marshial law.

Agreed. Panic is good... perhaps then we can start being treated by Adolf part 2. Nobody can say this can't happen again - it happens as I type to people we don't hear about. The "news" deems it unnewsworthy or unimportant.

Conspiracy theories abound in Australia. Our rights are being eroded every day and soon enough, we'll be left with nothing.

I understand that we don't want to have terrorists blow us up. Funnily enough, I don't want that either.

BUT do these laws guarantee that they're going to stop it? For example, the gun controversy. After Port Arthur guns were basically made illegal except for a few (which are used in restricted ways). What alot of the Average Joes don't understand is that the guns he used were ILLEGAL anyway, so whether these laws were in place before he rampaged or not he WOULD HAVE HAD ACCESS TO THE GUNS ANYWAY.

Yet Aussies swallowed it, hook, line and sinker. Yet people are still being shot and killed?!

So following that knee-jerk reaction and example of laws made that don't work, tell me EXACTLY how these laws are going to work?

Im White Australian and also Muslim.......infact there are a lot of "white" muslim australians. so you think you have to do something wrong to end up in a lotta trouble . your either very young or you have had a very good rare life so far brother.
i've decided to add some more i haven't read all of this post yet but have the es after reading the 1st 2 pages . some people believe that everything goes as it should .
this is just an example i'll throw in from personall experiance .
when i was 20 years old i was in parramatta leagues club taking a ****. in a urinal .(toilets) anyhow 1/2 way through 2 bouncers stormed in lifted me up and threw me out of the club . reason , somebody threw a bottle outside on the dance floor and ran into the male toilets.
now what if that guy had threatened JIHAD ON SOMEPEOPLE and let off some fireworks in the club starting a fire. what would've happened to me under these new laws think about it. amd i am a white aussie.

There is supposedly parliamentary oversight to go with the new laws. That only makes it more laughable.
Even with my law enforcement background I get a bit nervous about a period of detention with no charges clause. We need laws tailored to the new situation but I reckon they could have used a bit more nouse.

I to have something against periods of detention without charge. I will be interested to see what exactly is the wording of such a law. And what safeguards are in place. JH says he dosnt agree with a sunset clause because terrorism dosnt have one basically. But who is to say in ten years ( a proposed time limit for the legislation) that we wont need such laws. Id rather a ten year sunset clause and have to roll it over if its needed then have it written in permenantly and never see it fased out.

But, in this day and age of Terrorism some actions are necessary and this is just one of the proposals I guess. Its a sad world.
