ws starter motor issue

Hi Guys, I have a ws 2009 fiesta and am having issues with the starter motor, sometimes the car starts, sometimes it doesnt, ford says i need a new starter motor at a cost of $491, a mechanic friend of mine had a look and says its the connections and I should take it to a auto sparky. has anyone else had this problem and what did you do ?

Car has done about 80,000 kms and i dont think it should need a new starter motor already, its only 4 yrs old ???
