Given a service oil fill excluding the filter is 3.9 litres (4.3 with filter), it sound like there might have only been around a litre left in the sump so a real reason to be concerned about the risk of at least momentary oil starvation when the remaining oil perhaps flowed to the non pump pic up side of the sump while on a hill.
