Dig around in enough manuals... I'd been under the impression it was a fancy way to apply the brakes to stop speed creeping up while going downhill... turns out it's a pressure switch that open-circuits when the brakes are applied, cancelling the cruise setting. No switch, permanent open circuit, no cruise. So back to the shop to get the missing part...
